From Olympic terrain in Midway to a course overlooking Powder Mountain, here are Utah's best public mountain golf courses and what makes each one worth the drive.
Utah's valley courses are great, but the mountain courses are where the state actually shows off. Higher elevation means cooler summer rounds, longer ball flight, and views that make a bad shot easier to shrug off. Here are some of the best public mountain courses in the state, from Olympic venues to a course that looks out over a ski resort.
Wasatch Mountain State Park. Two full eighteen hole courses in Midway, the Lake Course and the Mountain Course, both around six thousand feet. The Lake Course has been a favorite since 1967, the Mountain Course opened in 1998 with its own set of challenges and views over Heber Valley. Golf Digest rates the facility 4.5 out of 5 stars as one of Utah's best places to play.
Soldier Hollow Golf Course. Right next door to Wasatch Mountain State Park, and a venue during the 2002 Winter Olympics. Two courses here too, the Gold and the Silver. The Gold Course was designed by Gene Bates and hosted the 2012 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship, the first USGA championship ever held in Utah.
Wolf Creek Resort. Up in Eden, open since 1963, stretching over 7,000 yards with views of Ogden Valley, Pineview Reservoir, Snowbasin, and Powder Mountain. It's the only Audubon Society certified course in Utah. One caveat: it's semi-private, so call ahead to confirm public tee time availability.
Park City Golf Club. Sits at 6,700 feet, municipally owned so fees stay reasonable despite the resort town zip code. Tree lined, tight off the tee, small fast greens.
